The development of transcendental, phenomenological, hermeneutical, and existential philosophy affected a shift in the role of philosophy within theological method. Philosophy was no longer limited to an auxiliary or instrumental role within the theological task. The three classic theological approaches (Augustinian, Thomist, and Neo-Scholastic) display common elements as well as significant differences. All emphasize the tradition (especially the Scriptures), the scientific character of
